SLF supports Barrio Botany, which provides urban San Diego students with hands-on, garden-based education that strengthens academic achievement, environmental literacy, and lifelong health. Through vibrant outdoor classrooms, students learn to grow fresh produce, develop horticulture and basic business skills, and build deeper connections to nutrition, sustainability, and the natural world while enjoying the food they harvest themselves.

The program has reached approximately 2,500 students across 30 of San Diego's highest-poverty elementary schools, serving neighborhoods facing overlapping challenges including food insecurity, health disparities, housing instability, community violence, and exposure to environmental toxins.

By increasing access to healthy foods and experiential learning opportunities, Barrio Botany supports students' cognitive, emotional, and social development while helping reduce behavioral issues and foster stronger community wellbeing.
