The San Onofre Nuclear Waste Advocacy Program is the Foundation's flagship program. It addresses the approximately 3.6 million pounds of nuclear waste stored at the decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. The site rests in a seismically active, corrosive marine environment vulnerable to sea level rise, coastal erosion, wildfire, tsunami, flood, and earthquake risk.
Though the reactors have been shuttered, the waste will remain radiologically hazardous for thousands of years. Working closely with policymakers like Congressman Mike Levin's office, SLF lobbies to move the waste to keep our coastal community safe.
