Partner program
Uniontown is a rural community that has become emblematic of the disproportionate environmental and public health burdens placed on low-income Black communities across the United States. The issue gained national attention through the documentary Uniontown, which exposed the impacts of coal ash disposal, failing infrastructure, and decades of environmental neglect on local residents.
Since partnering with Uniontown leaders in 2017, we have worked alongside residents, scientists, legal advocates, and university partners to support air and water monitoring, soil contamination research, landfill oversight, and food justice initiatives. The organization has also helped convene coalitions with academic institutions and environmental experts, including a collaboration with Cornell University focused on restoring a historic cemetery impacted by environmental degradation.
In 2025, SLF staff continued on-the-ground engagement with residents to advance long-term solutions centered on clean air, public health, community resources, and environmental accountability.
