The debate over nuclear energy's future in California continues, but one issue demands action now: nearly 2,000 tons of radioactive waste remain onsite at the decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). The plant's 3.6 million pounds of spent nuclear fuel will take upwards of 100,000 years to decay, and sits only 100ft from the Pacific Ocean.
Alternatively, renewable solutions like solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal do not have a radioactive burden and are playing an increasingly significant role in shaping how communities power their futures.
